Steve Hudson became passionate about rope development and production due to his passion for something else--caving and rappelling. Rope quality for climbers and rappellers in the pre-70's was inconsistent and lacking in durability and toughness. PMI tackled those problems head-on by buying their own rope braider and using their knowledge of kernmantle ropemaking to produce economical but top-quality ropes, which they've been doing with great success ever since.
